Chefs Guild of Maldives (CGM) announced that local chefs from the guild will participate in this year’s Worldchefs Congress and Expo, the largest chefs’ convention in the world.

This marks the first time for the Maldives to take part in the Worldchefs Congress, which will be held September 24 – 27 in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The archipelago will be represented at the convention by CGM’s founder and president Mariyam Nooruddin and her deputy, Chef Ishaq Solih.

According to CGM, the Maldives received this grand opportunity upon CGM earning membership of World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS). CGM, which had been founded only two years prior, was approved for membership as the guild is the only one of its kind in the Maldives, in addition to successfully hosting the Food and Hospitality Asia Maldives culinary challenge in 2015 and 2016. The culinary challenge is a competition endorsed by WACS.

Shortly after its founding, CGM had represented the Maldives in two events with the Food Asia 2016 in Singapore last April, and the FHA Culinary Challenge. The participating team from CGM had won two medals in these events.

Over 800 representatives from various countries are to participate in this year’s Worldchefs Congress, which is held once every two years. The convention will feature discussions and information exchange on various culinary topics as well as a debate on the influence of social media on the industry.
