Torrential rain, thunderstorms, and gusts of wind reaching 40 mph are expected, accompanied by rough seas.
According to MET, the heaviest rainfall yesterday was recorded in Gaafu Dhaalu Fares-Maathodhaa, with 129.7 millimeters of rain.
The country is currently experiencing the Iruvai or north-east monsoon, which typically begins in December and lasts through March. The effects of the north-east monsoon are usually felt in the northern and central atolls by mid-December and across the entire nation by January. The Hulhangu or south-west monsoon is observed from April to November.
This year’s heavy rains have already caused significant damage in various parts of the Maldives. On January 3, torrential rain in Male' led to widespread flooding, impacting almost all roads and causing extensive damage to homes.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) estimated the damages at MVR 2.2 million, marking it as the most significant weather-related damage recorded so far this year.
