Ahmed Rizwan (Rizey), who was named Maldives' best footballer of the year during the recent Maldives Sports Awards, received a warm welcome today upon returning to his home island Dhiffushi after the ceremony.

Among those at the harbour to welcome the Club Eagles' player include the island council's senior officials and the island's youth.

When Rizwan got off the speedboat and stepped onto the jetty, his father Ahmed Rasheed placed a crown on his head and his mother Wazeeha put on a welcome tag on his arm.

Dhiffushi Council's President Ibrahim Sunil said they decided to host the welcome event because it was a moment of national pride for the island.

"Rizey is a product created in this island. We consider it an honor for Rizey to receive this national award," Sunil said with pride.

Other nominees of the award include Club Maziya's Hamza Mohamed (Hampu) and the team's Ibrahim Aisam (Tony).

The 29 year old player was also previously named the most promising player by Football Association of Maldives (FAM).

During the last season, Rizwan scored goals in all three tournaments he played in. In the President's Cup, he scored three goals each in all three matches he played in, except the final match and scored a total of 23 goals in all 12 matches of the league.

Rizwan, who also scored for the Eagles at the AFC Cup Qualifiers, scored 27 goals in the 18 matches he played in during the previous season as well.

He also became the first Maldivian footballer to have scored 100 goals in the Maldivian Premier League, last season, after he scored goals in 12 consecutive matches.
