Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon has announced that efforts are ongoing to begin monitoring Maldives' ocean territory through the use of satellites.

The Minister made these comments while speaking in a talk show on state TV last night.

Ghassan stated that major crimes organized at international levels are committed in the Maldives' seas because this area is a key part of the global trade path. He said that due to this, the President aims to ensure the security of the Maldives' oceans are upheld independently.

"The President's intention is for Maldives' to carry its international responsibility by itself. This is to say, our territory, the area under our responsibility, will be monitored by ourselves," Ghassan said.

Ghassan said that multiple steps are being taken to ensure this is done.

As such, he said that in the near future, a system would be set up to monitor the Maldives' ocean territory through satellites as part of ongoing work with the Maldives Space Research Organization (MSRO).

"MSRO, an organization that has close ties to some among the NASA team as well, is working with our ministry now under the President's advice," the Minister said.

Previously, Maldives' ocean territory was monitored through the use of a helicopter gifted to Maldives by India. Later, three military drones have been brought from Turkey, which are also used in these efforts now.

Ghassan stated that the introduction of these drones has also strengthened monitoring of the seas.
