Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to stage a protest during the opening of Parliament and against the annual Presidential Address.
A parliamentary session is scheduled for Thursday, during which President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will deliver his second Presidential Address, marking his first address to the 20th Parliament. MDP plans to protest outside Parliament during the session.
It is believed that parliament members belonging to MDP will also protest on the Parliament floor.
The session will be chaired by President Muizzu and Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah. It is rumoured that there is growing political tension between the two.
MDP is protesting against the Constitutional amendments passed by the parliament during the previous session. The party has previously held a mass rally against these amendments, with another march organized in criticism of government policies.
MDP has stated that it will continue its efforts until the government is steered in the right direction.
