The Budget Committee has set a deadline for November 19, by which all budget-related work is to be completed.
The Committee has scheduled to summon the Finance Ministry to discuss the budget on November 9. The Committee also discussed summoning the MMA and Auditor General's Office for budget discussions under Article 231 of the parliament regulations, although exact dates have not yet been decided.
In addition to this, the Committee also discussed which independent institutions will be included in the budget discussions. Fonadhoo MP Mohamed Mamdhooh proposed, and the committee approved, that the administrative desk be granted the authority to select independent institutions that can submit opinions on the budget in writing. South Hithadhoo MP Ibrahim Nazil opposed this move, appealing to the committee to not deprive independent commissions of the opportunity to physically attend and submit their views on the budget. Committee members agreed with this view as well.
"Hence, we will first bring in the written submissions, review them, and then meet with those independent institutions that choose to meet with us," Committee Chair and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Saleem stated.
On October 29, the government submitted the proposed State Budget 2027 to parliament, totaling MVR 52.6 billion. Of the total amount, MVR 42.7 billion (approximately 71.5 percent) goes towards recurrent expenditure. The budget projects that the State will receive MVR 43.2 billion in revenue and free aid next year. This is MVR 1.4 billion higher than this year's figure.
