National airline Maldivian's seaplane terminal has been officially opened today following modernization and development.
Developed with major changes, the facility includes various amenities to provide premium services to tourists visiting the Maldives, featuring a theme that showcases the country's natural beauty and culture.
The terminal's space has now been doubled, designed to serve 90 people indoors and 40 people outdoors simultaneously.
The terminal features an outdoor area designed to match the Maldivian environment, equipped with a kids' play area and a special kiosk offering souvenirs and light snacks. The number of boarding gates has also increased. Additionally, a dedicated canteen has been established for Maldivian's staff.
Speaking at the ceremony held to open Maldivian's seaplane terminal, Island Aviation Managing Director Ibrahim Iyaz stated that significant changes were brought to the interior and exterior of the facility under the project, which began development last year.
He described it as an important effort undertaken to further enrich the experience of tourists in the Maldives, as well as a key initiative carried out to expand and develop the country's seaplane services.
Iyaz noted that as part of the company's efforts to expand and develop seaplane services, work is also underway to increase the seaplane fleet. In this regard, he stated that orders for two latest Twin Otter Classic aircraft were placed last month, and these two planes are expected to be brought to the Maldives and put into service next year.
At the ceremony, Tourism Minister Mohamed Ameen highlighted that the company's financial situation is improving. He stated that over the past three years or so, services have been transitioned to a new model, company assets have increased, and important infrastructure development work is being carried out.
He noted that work on an office building that reflects Maldivian's stature is proceeding rapidly.
Maldivian commenced seaplane services in April 2014, and the company's seaplane terminal was opened in 2015. The airline's seaplane fleet currently consists of 11 Twin Otter aircraft.
