STELCO stated last night the reason why Hulhumale' lost power twice since Thursday, resulting in inconveniences for the public, is because excavation work had damaged electricity cables.
There was an electricity outage in Hulhumale' Phase 1 last night due to an underground high voltage cable being cut. The power went out last Thursday in Hulhumale' for about two hours as well.
STELCO said there was an electricity outage in Hulhumale' last night because of an underground high voltage cable being damaged by a private company that was conducting excavation work, where they dug into Kuredhimaa Hingun.
A similar situation resulted in some parts of Hulhumale' Phase 1 losing power last Thursday as well. On that day, the electricity outage was the result of construction work that saw the area near Banafsa Hingun being dug into and a high voltage cable being damaged.
STELCO has previously advised repeatedly to work in such a way while digging into the road to be careful of cutting into cables due to power outages.
The company requested last night to be more responsible and to plan ahead so that the underground electricity network does not experience any damage.
"Repeated situations that occur frequently resulting in damage to the electricity network and service disruption is a major concern where the public has to face mounting difficulties," said STELCO.
As STELCO has stated before, most power outages in recent times have been due to cable cuts.
Electricity cables are buried as per international standards, which includes tape that outlines the area where the cable is along with safety sheets. Even so, STELCO said that due to careless efforts resulting in damage to cable on the part of excavation workers, STELCO has noticed their efforts to hide the damage by wrapping tape around the cable.
