A new chapter was opened 40 years ago on 15th September 1986 for Maldives’ economy and maritime industry. This was the day the Male’ Commercial Harbor was officially inaugurated. The beginning of the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) as a port operator is also tied to this day.

Serving as the main gateway to Maldives economy for the last 40 years, the Male’ Commercial Harbor plays an important role in economic growth. While MPL celebrates its 40th anniversary, the past shows the service of the harbor that raised Maldives’ bar from the hard work of many people.

In the late 1970s, tourism was introduced to Maldives, boosting Maldives economic activities. One of the obstacles to the tourism industry at the time was the lack of a harbor where goods brought in by sea could be disembarked.

Maldives has relied on imports for a long time. Up until the Male’ Commercial Harbor was opened in 1986, there was no harbor specifically for unloading goods in Maldives.

At the time, it was a burden to disembark goods that are imported to Maldives. The government at the time believed there needed to be progress in the goods unloading service when looking at the rate Maldives’ economy was growing. There were difficulties to start the project due to the state’s financial status at the time, but the government decided to move forward with the development of the Male’ Commercial Harbor project as it was an important project for the country’s economy.

While speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Male’ Commercial Harbor on 15th September 1986, then-President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom said moving forward with such a project with high expenses is difficult but it was carried out due to its importance.

“With our economy developing and industries being created in Maldives, we need to find a way where we can easily track goods coming into Maldives, find a way to load export goods onto boats in such a way that it is easier, lighter, does not take as many days and does not cost as much and if not, we will not be able to progress,” said former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom during the ceremony.

Work to develop the harbor started in 1985 under a government loan. Once work on the harbor was done, the Maldives Ports Authority (MPA) was established on 1st September 1986, with the harbor being officially inaugurated on 15th September 1986.

The MPA became a company, with their name being changed to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) in 2008.

Work was done to improve the harbor afterward as well. In the last 40 years, urban resources were developed and there were many efforts in procuring equipment for the harbor.

With aid from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), an important project to further develop the harbor in two stages took place. The first stage saw the construction of the eastern keywall, refurnishing the western keywall, making a marinecraft workshop and a mechanical workshop. A security office and lighting posts were affixed as well. This stage was completed in 1992.

The second stage of the project saw the development of a 101-meter keywall. The development was completed and officially inaugurated on 11th June 1997. This keywall is used to this day by the Male’ Commercial Harbor in bringing container carriers closer to the harbor.

Even though there were many difficulties and disruptions in the last 40 years, MPL served as a great example in providing harbor services. There was hard work on the part of the staff in providing harbor services as they saw it as a national service no matter the situation. Even during the COVID-19 lockdown, uninterrupted harbor services being provided is an example of that.

Many years have gone by as space issues in the Male’ Commercial Harbor have caused operational disruptions. Because of this, disembarkation of goods is delayed and is subject to criticism, with MPL continuing to provide their services regardless. Even with harbor congestion, harbor services are continuously provided with the available resources and planning due to the efforts of the company.

Space issues in the Male’ Commercial Harbor grew, with services being provided even though there were difficulties. Plans were made many times in the past to construct a new harbor. But, no practical efforts were taken, harbor services did not get better and have been at a standstill for years.

When the Male’ Commercial Harbor reached its 40th anniversary, the horizon showed a hopeful project where the Male’ Commercial Harbor was to be relocated to Thilafushi. The project will serve as a permanent solution to the current lack of space issues in the harbor, with harbor services reaching greater heights.

The Male’ Commercial Harbor is currently being operated without modern harbor features. There are many reasons for this. The biggest reason is the lack of space. However, the development of Thilafushi Port is planned to have modern port resources. Thilafushi Port is set to provide more space than currently available as a stable and quality service port.

While speaking during this year’s Independence Day ceremony, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said the work to relocate the port to Thilafushi is one of the projects the government is prioritizing.

“We hope to fully relocate the Male’ port to Thilafushi by 11th November 2027 and establish the port at Thilafushi, and that will be the day we free Male’ from the congestion and these shackles, expand the port and expand Maldives’ economy. The project that the government sees as the top priority is the relocation of the port to Thilafushi,” said President Muizzu.

President Muizzu’s most important economic pledge is to have the Thilafushi Port’s services begin on 11th November 2027.
