Imported goods from private companies went up to 14 percent within the first 5 months of 2026.
According to statistics from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), goods worth MVR 1.2 billion were imported between January and May. The same timeframe last year saw goods worth MVR 1 billion being imported.
Private companies account for 66 percent of the goods imported to Maldives. The rest of the 34 percent is imported by state owned enterprises and the state.
Imports from the government within the first five months of 2026 saw a 52 percent increase at MVR 528 million. The same timeframe last year was MVR 347 million.
One of the reasons imports went up that high is due to the fuel price increases.
Goods worth MVR 1.8 billion were imported to Maldives within the first five months of 2026. MVR 498 million was spent on fuel imports, with MVR 350 million being spent on food imports.
Expenses towards fish imports were the highest within food, at MVR 68 million. Fruit imports were at MVR 50 million and milk imports were at MVR 47 million.
Goods worth MVR 234 million were exported in the first five months of 2026, with it being an 11 percent increase.
