After spending 11 years in the position of CEO of the Maldives' largest telecommunications company, Dhiraagu, Ismail Rasheed retired from the post today.
In a post made on LinkedIn, Ismail expressed his gratitude to all employees of Dhiraagu and all parties who assisted the company in reaching this stage.
"Dhiraagu is the company holding the leading position and delivering good results in Maldivian telecommunication services. Dhiraagu has provided services to all inhabited islands, resorts, and all households in the Maldives," said the message sent by Ismail in English.
Ismail served the company for approximately 40 years, starting from the team present when Dhiraagu was formed in 1988. He assumed the position of CEO of the company in 2015.
When Dhiraagu began its services, Ismail commenced his service in the telecommunications sector at Cable & Wireless. He performed a significant amount of important work related to the development of telecommunications and digital connectivity in the Maldives.
Major projects in which Ismail was actively involved include the network rollout program that connected all inhabited islands in the Maldives, introducing GSM mobile services in the Maldives, and laying the Dhiraagu-SLT submarine cable system in 2006. Additionally, Ismail played a leading role in establishing domestic submarine cables in the north and south of the Maldives and establishing Dhiraagu's digital infrastructure.

Ismail played a key role in marketing and managing the offering for Maldivian and international institutional and retail investors during Dhiraagu's IPO held in 2011. With his appointment as the CEO and Managing Director of Dhiraagu in 2015, he brought significant advancements and changes to Dhiraagu.
With Ismail's retirement, the position of CEO at Dhiraagu was assumed by Valdemar (Valde) Ferradaz, a South African national.
The position of CEO at Dhiraagu is appointed by the company's majority shareholder, Beyon. Beyon carried out the process of appointing the CEO under the oversight of the Board of Directors' Remuneration, Nomination and Governance Committee of Dhiraagu.
