Bank of Maldives (BML) CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef has been appointed as Chairman of the Asian Bankers Association (ABA).

This is the first time in the history of the board a Maldivian has been appointed to the position. BML said that Shareef will take over as Chairman today as per the ABA board's decision.

Shareef has served as ABA's Vice Chairman from 2018 to 2020. BML said Shareef has aided the association in achieving their strategic aims and fostering the relationship between regional member banks.

"And with the assurance of trust toward Shareef's leadership, he was appointed to the position once more in 2025," as was told by BML to the media.

In regards to being appointed as ABA's Chairman, Shareef said he is grateful for the trust placed in him by the board and member banks.

"It is an honor to serve ABA as Chairman with my experience. My hope is to further foster the relationships between the banks, and in order to facilitate progress in Asia's banking industry, to work together as closely as possible with the board, Secretariat and member associations," said Shareef.

ABA Secretary Treasurer Dr. Darson Chiu recognized Shareef's efforts in upholding the principles of the association. BML stated that ABA's Secretary Treasurer gave his assurance that he will fully cooperate in the efforts behind achieving ABA's developmental goals, and in the progress of member banks and the regional banking industry.

The ABA was formed 45 years ago, and is one of the top regional institutions that represents banks and banking associations in Asia.

The institution's main efforts surround policy discussions with leaders in the banking industry, policymakers, regulators and international financial institutions. They also work to build the capacity and share timely and appropriate policies concerning the industry to member institutions.

"Shareef's appointment by the ABA is an important step in progress for BML and Maldives. With this, Maldivian representation in regional banking leadership will be further strengthened and expanded," as per BML.

BML has made the arrangements to hold ABA's conference for 2026 in Maldives from 1st September to 3rd September.
