The one millionth tourist to travel to Maldives this year is a Spaniard.

The honor of the one millionth tourist to travel to Maldives is Almudena Esparza, who traveled to Maldives with her husband to vacation at The Pearl Seaview Guesthouse at V. Fulidhoo. This is also their first trip to Maldives.

It took six months for one million tourists to visit Maldives in 2026, with the same being achieved in early June in 2025.

While welcoming the one millionth tourist to Maldives during a ceremony this afternoon, who traveled via Qatar Airways, Tourism Minister Mohamed Ameen stated that seeing the one millionth tourist make their way to Maldives by June, even after the number of tourists had dropped due to the Middle East war, is an accomplishment. He also said that there is assurance of coming close to reaching the aim for tourism in 2026 by the third quarter.

The government's aim is to bring 2.5 million tourists to Maldives this year.

"A lot of work has been done with the entire industry coming together. We are conducting more efforts to bring more airlines," said Minister Ameen.

He also said that there are many efforts underway to offset the impact on Maldivian tourism caused by the war, and that these efforts will move forward in the future as well.

Ameen said that while work is being done at a fast pace to bring more tourists to Maldives, the price of tickets having gone up due to the price of fuel having increased is also an obstacle at this point in time.

As the number of tourists who have come to Maldives has passed the one million mark, it is still five percent lower than the number of tourists who came to Maldives in 2025 in the same time frame. The number of tourists who came to Maldives in June 2026 is 17 percent lower compared to June 2025.
