MVR 10 billion in loan to construction industry

According to statistics from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the amount from loans via banks up until April compared to January has gone up by around MVR 1 billion.

The loan from commercial banks to businesses in the Maldivian construction industry has risen to MVR 10 billion.

According to statistics from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the amount from loans via banks up until April 2026 compared to January 2026 has gone up by around MVR 1 billion.

In January, the loan amount given out to the construction industry was at MVR 9 billion.

By the end of 2025, the construction industry had been given out loans totaling MVR 8.8 billion, which is a 14 percent increase. The loan amount given out to the construction industry has increased by around 40 percent in the last five years.

As per MMA's business survey, the construction industry has progressed and created a high number of jobs in the first quarter of 2026.

Aside from the tourism industry, the biggest loans are given out to businesses in the construction industry by the banks.

Banks had given out MVR 51.7 billion in loans up to April 2026 to various businesses and private companies, which is a 6 percent increase from January. In January, the loan amount from banks was at MVR 49 billion.
