A total of USD 46.4 million (MVR 715 million) has gone to the state in rental payments by resorts in the first four months of 2026.

As per statistics from the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), there has been an increase of rental payments by resorts by 23 percent compared to the same time period last year. The first four months of 2025 saw the state receive MVR 582 million as rental payments from resorts.

Outside of taxes, 27 percent of the revenue that enters the state is from rental payment by resorts.

March has seen the highest rental payments by resorts this year at MVR 440 million. The second highest was in April at MVR 129 million. January saw an amount of MVR 90 million and February was at MVR 19 million.

According to MIRA's 2023 audit report, there was MVR 5.9 billion in unpaid rental payments by resorts and penalties, amounting to 45 percent of the money that the state was supposed to receive up until then. The report also reads that there was a drop of 38 percent in the rental payments that were supposed to be received from 2021 to 2023. This is due to the concessions that were given in paying rent in 2022 for resorts, with the change being made so that MVR 4.1 billion would not have to be paid.

The Auditor General highlighted in the report that because of the concessions toward the rent that needs to be paid to the state and as rent penalties are forgiven, it empowers resort owners to not pay resort rental costs.
