The revenue from Airport Development Fee in April dropped by 13 percent due to the decreased number of tourist arrivals. 

Statistics shared by Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) indicate that MVR 150 million was received last month as Airport Development Fee. This is approximately MVR 20 million lower than the figure recorded in March last year, when the amount stood at MVR 170 million. 

Departure fee revenues also showed a 13 percent decrease. 

As of April this year, the State has received MVR 1.6 billion in Airport Development Fee and Departure Fee together. This is approximately MVR 300 million higher than last year. 

In December 2024, the government brought major changes to the Airport Development Fee and Departure Fee. As such, taxes for passengers travelling via Business and First Class saw an increase of 65 to 100 percent.

At present, economy class passengers are charged USD 50 as Departure and Airport Development Fee. Business class passengers are charged USD 120, while First Class passengers are charged USD 240. Those travelling on private jets are charged USD 480. 

The increment from the Airport Development Fee is deposited into the Sovereign Development Fund.
