The National AI and Data Competency Center (Maldives AI Lab), a national platform jointly established by MindCo and the Bank of Maldives (BML) to utilize AI and data services in a responsible and impactful manner within the government and key industries, was launched today.
The platform was inaugurated during a ceremony held today to kick off the CoLab 26 event, which is being jointly hosted by MindCo and BML.
The lab was officially launched by Home Minister Ali Ihusaan.
This platform was inaugurated under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's digital vision, the 'Maldives 2.0' agenda.
The primary objectives of this platform are to realize gains from AI investments, deliver citizen-centric services, establish robust governance, and accelerate work efficiency.
BML stated that the Maldives AI Lab, in collaboration with the private sector, will build credible national capabilities through collaborative efforts and responsible innovations.
Speaking at today's ceremony, the Managing Director of MindCo, Saeeda Umar, stated that the purpose of the lab introduced today is to digitalize public services, accelerate work processes, and strengthen governance. She further noted that the creation of a national-level center through the partnership between MindCo and BML to focus on emerging technologies like AI demonstrates the importance of the government's investments in foundational resources to guide the country's upcoming transition phase down the right path.
According to her, the creation of a specialized national center in the field of AI and data will pave the way to find solutions that align with Maldivian culture, suit its institutions, and are most appropriate for the Maldives environment.
BML's CEO and Managing Director, Mohamed Shareef, stated that in today's world, AI and data will provide the capability to deliver public services, strengthen institutions, enhance business operations, and secure equal opportunities for all citizens across the islands.
"As the national bank, our role extends beyond financial services. We must bear the responsibility of supporting national progress, strengthening economic sustainability, and ensuring that innovations benefit communities across the entire Maldives," Shareef said.
He stated that with the assistance of the competency center launched today, he hopes national capability in the field of developing technologies will increase.
"Our hope is to advance Maldivian talent, empower businesses and institutions, and build a robust digital ecosystem in the Maldives." Shareef said.
He stated that CoLab 26, which commenced today, marks the beginning of key discussions required to develop the Maldives in this field.
CoLab 26 is a four-day national program conducted to formulate the national policies and strategies that the Maldives will adopt regarding the use of AI.
Senior government officials, private businesses, technical experts, as well as software developers will participate in this program.
During the first two days of the program, the primary focus will be on identifying key areas to utilize AI, taking into account the benefits to the public through AI and national targets. The final two days of the program will feature a "hackathon" held with the guidance of experts.
