In the first quarter of 2026, Velana International Airport (VIA) has handled 24,782 tonnes of cargo. 

Statistics shared by MACL on social media show that this is a 13 percent year-on-year increase. 

Of the total amount, 18,908 tonnes were inbound cargo, and 5,873 tonnes were outbound. 

In the first three months of the year, VIA handled 4,277 tonnes of transshipment cargo. This includes 322 tonnes of sea-to-air cargo and 3,955 tonnes of air-to-air cargo. 

This also indicates a 14 percent increase compared to last year's figures. 

Airlines receiving transshipment services at VIA include AFCOM, Fly Vaayu, MJets Air, Qatar Cargo, National Airlines, Air Master and MNG Airlines. 

The first quarter also saw in increase in freighter trips. March also set a record as the single month in which VIA handled the highest number of freighters. The first three months saw 264 tonnes of air cargo. 

Last year, VIA handled 89,000 tonnes of cargo, a 10 percent increase from 2024. 

VIA has also served approximately 2.4 million passengers in the first quarter of this year, of which 1.5 million were foreign passengers.
