An additional 1,500 tonnes of cooking gas storage capacity will be developed in the Greater Male' region, as part of efforts to strengthen supply security, Finance Minister Moosa Zameer has said.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Minister Zameer said the project is being carried out by State Trading Organization (STO) subsidiary Maldive Gas and Procurement work has already begun.

Once completed, the expanded facility will allow the Maldives to store enough cooking gas for approximately two and a half months in the Male' area. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

Maldive Gas currently has a storage capacity of around 1,000 tonnes. The additional infrastructure is expected to significantly improve the country’s buffer against supply disruptions.

Minister Zameer noted that ensuring consistent supply can be challenging, as gas shipments rely on smaller vessels operating in the region. However, he said there is no major issue in sourcing cooking gas, with suppliers also serving nearby countries such as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Maldive Gas has limited sales twice in the past two months due to increased demand, highlighting the need for expanded storage.

The minister added that STO has also acquired a vessel this year as part of broader efforts to improve fuel and gas logistics.
