Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed announced last night that STO had brought in two shipments of fuel last week on schedule even as fuel prices rise globally due to the war in the Middle East.

Saeed said that fuel is imported to Maldives by STO under a nomination arrangement made ahead with suppliers based on demand in the country.

In accordance with this schedule, two shipments were imported last week as well, he said.

"In this same vein, more shipments have been scheduled to be brought to Maldives in line with nomination and dates agreed with suppliers," Saeed said.

STO said last week that it is coordinating with other fuel suppliers to ensure stable nationwide supply, adding there are no issues at present.

On Sunday last week, STO Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim said that there is currently enough fuel for two weeks in the country. He announced then that a new shipment was scheduled to come within the week.

Even then, STO had said that they expected new shipments to arrive on Friday last week and tomorrow.

At present, STO sells a litre of petrol at MVR 16.01 and a litre of diesel at MVR 17.54.

Minister Saeed assured last night that the government, under the guidance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, is taking robust measures to minimize the impact on Maldivians as global fuel prices rise and supply challenges are faced owing to the ongoing war in the Middle East.

Under this, STO is working on maintaining fuel stocks in the Maldives to ensure uninterrupted supply, he said.
