The Australia Awards program is once again offering promising opportunities for Maldivians committed to professional growth and the country's development.

Applications are now open for Australia Awards Scholarships for study commencing in 2027, with the deadline set for April 30, 2026.

Fully funded by the Australian Government, Australia Awards Scholarships provide opportunities to citizens of Maldives to undertake full-time master’s degree study. Scholarships are offered to individuals in the public, private and civil society sectors to attain the skills and knowledge needed to contribute to national development.

The Scholarship supports successful applicants to study in Australia, home to some of the highest-ranking universities in the world. In 2026, 20 Maldivians commenced their master’s degrees at world-class Australian institutions with the support of Australia Awards Scholarships.

Ismail Mohamed Zayan, an Australia Awards scholar who commenced his Master of Development Studies at the University of Melbourne in 2026, says, “I applied to Australia Awards in the hopes of academic and career enrichment, but it has exceeded my expectations. It has opened doors to culture, art, new friends and new opportunities. I encourage everyone to take a chance and apply.”

Eligible candidates can currently apply for an Australia Awards Scholarship to pursue study in fields aligned with two priority development sectors: Effective and Accountable State and Resilient Community and State. Examples of relevant fields of study range from Law and Justice to Animation and Visual Effects.

The vast opportunities that this Scholarship provides extend beyond academic growth, Australia Awards said, adding that scholars return home having built strong networks and gained cross-cultural experience. They also become part of a global network of Australia Awards alumni, which offers ongoing professional development opportunities and networking forums long after their return.

Shaziya Ali, Assistant Coordinator at the US Embassy in Maldives and Chairperson of Maldives Australia Alumni, says, “I chose Australia Awards because it offered so much more than a degree. It’s a truly life-changing experience. Studying in a diverse, world-class environment helped shape who I am today, both professionally and personally. Coming back to a community of friends and experts through the alumni network means that I get to relive those wonderful times in Australia, while giving back to the Maldivian community together. Australia Awards doesn’t just give you an education; it gives you a lifelong network.”
