An amendment has been proposed to the Employment Act to ease the burden on small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) by exempting them from paying quota fees for expatriate workers.

The amendment proposed by the government states that the cabinet may decide to exempt employers belonging to certain categories of businesses from paying quota fees. It also outlines the factors to be considered when determining which businesses qualify for the exemption.

Among the criteria is the need to create a favorable environment for micro, small and medium enterprises and to expand their role in the national economy.

The amendment further calls for consideration of measures that facilitate long-term employment opportunities within these enterprises and help bridge disparities between smaller and larger businesses.

It also aims to encourage innovation and competition in the business sector by supporting the introduction of new ideas, products and services.
