A record 224,788 tourists visited the Maldives in January, according to tourism minister Thoriq Ibrahim last night.

This marks the highest number of arrivals recorded in a single month.

In a post on X, minister Thoriq said the figure surpassed the previous monthly record, which was set in December last year when 224,455 tourists arrived in the country.

Describing the increase as a positive sign for the year ahead, the minister said the figures showed what could be achieved through collective effort across the tourism sector.

Minister Thoriq also credited the rise in arrivals to the government’s efforts to expand the tourism industry and to ensure its economic benefits are more widely shared.

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism on 28 December, Russia was the largest source market for visitors, with 26,965 arrivals. Italy followed with 21,137 tourists, while China ranked third, contributing 18,531 visitors.
