Bank of Maldives CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef stated yesterday that the newly constructed Dh. Kudahuvadhoo BML branch is the beginning of digitalizing island branches and will serve as a guide for customers.

The branch was inaugurated on the island by Finance Minister Moosa Zameer.

While speaking at the ceremony, CEO Shareef said that service at the Kudahuvadhoo branch will be digital and will not have counters. He also said that the building was designed in a "lounge style", where customers can be met and talk.

Shareef said that the reason for this is due to 99.7 percent of customer transactions being digital.

Shareef went on to say that in light of that, all transactions at the Kudahuvadhoo branch will be digital. The CEO highlighted that services such as opening an account, requesting loans and procuring cash card services will no longer require a queue at the new branch.

As per Shareef, as a USD ATM has been placed at the newly established Self Service Center, Kudahuvadhoo customers will no longer have to physically go to the branch in order to deposit USD into their accounts.

"And so, Kudahuvadhoo branch employees will now have the time to further improve their quality of services," said the CEO.

Shareef had said that with the digitalization of the Kudahuvadhoo branch, employees will be moving to the island and become "Financial Advisors".

He stated that one of the things the employees would do is tell customers how they can procure BML services digitally and become employees who would make customers aware of said services.

Additional responsibilities of the Financial Advisors:

  • Advise customers how to overcome financial issues should one arise.
  • How to protect customers from scams.
  • Teach financial literacy to residents of Dhaalu Atoll.
  • Give recommendations to young entrepreneurs.
  • Advise ways in opening a business.

Shareef continued by saying that employees of the Kudahuvadhoo branch will be independent individuals and "financial acquaintances".

"They will be acquaintances who will lend a hand in changing perspectives when an issue arises," said the CEO.

When the foundations had been laid for branches last year and while preparations were being made for 12 of the branches to be opened by March 2026, Shareef had said that all the branches will be digitalized and will be changed to the style of Kudahuvadhoo's branch.
