National carrier Maldivian has commenced seaplane flights to N. Velidhoo.

Maldivian hosted a special ceremony in Velidhoo this afternoon to inaugurate the service. The ceremony was attended by Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen, Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, senior officials of Maldivian, and council members of Velidhoo and Fohdhoo.

Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Ilyas said at the ceremony that the introduction of the service would present new opportunities for local tourism in the region, and offer convenience to the public travelling for leisure, business and essential needs.

He further assured that ticket prices for Male'-Velidhoo trips will be affordable, adding that instead of a commercial approach, the service was introduced by the government to offer ease to the public.

Ticket prices

  • Return tickets for locals: MVR 999
  • One-way tickets for tourists: MVR 93

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that seaplane trips to Velidhoo will be commenced this month during his visit to the island in July last year.

He said then that although an airport is to be developed in the Vihafaru lagoon near Velidhoo, seaplane flights will be introduced direct to Velidhoo.

Maldivian even at present operates seaplane flights to B. Fulhadhoo, Fehendhoo, Goidhoo and Kamadhoo. The service will also be introduced in AA. Thoddoo next month.
