MACL has announced that it will be taking strict action against those providing unauthorized services at the Velana International Airport such as sale of SIM cards and foreign currency exchange.

MACL said that permits to provide these services are granted to licensed partners under agreements with the company. Any other persons found providing these services will face strict action, they said.

The issue of unauthorized sale of SIM cards and currency exchange services outside the VIA terminals had come to authorities notice in recent days.

In a statement issued on January 1, MACL said that permitted service providers must do so at dedicated counters or service centres. Personnel staffing these counters must be dressed in company uniforms or must have identification clearly displayed, MACL stated.

MACL specified that even such companies are prohibited from providing services outside those defined in the agreements.

The company said that permits to service providers and businesses at VIA are issued by MACL alone, under special conditions. It is prohibited for any other parties to conduct such activities at the airport premises.

MACL stated that it is their responsibility to ensure the safety and protection of tourists and others using the airport and to maintain the quality of services available at the airport. Hence, strict action in line with laws and regulations will be taken against any persons found to be providing services at VIA without relevant authorization.

MACL stated that in such cases, the company will not bear responsibility for any losses incurred by the offending service providers.
