Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has decided to reduce waste disposal fees charged to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), effective February 1.
The decision follows a meeting held on December 17 between the government and SME representatives, where business owners raised concerns over the high cost of waste disposal. During the meeting, participants called for a clear distinction between large businesses and SMEs, and for a revision of garbage pricing.
In a statement, WAMCO said the fee reduction would be implemented in line with a commitment made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during the meeting. The company said it is currently working on introducing special pricing bands for SMEs, details of which will be announced at a later date.
Cabinet discussed several measures on Wednesday aimed at improving the effectiveness of initiatives related to the SME sector. According to the government, the next two years have been designated for the implementation of special measures to promote small and medium enterprises.
Some of these measures are set to be implemented from January 1, with further information to be announced by the relevant authorities.
