Bank of Maldives (BML) has signed an agreement with the Maldives Olympic Committee (MOC) to continue providing sports scholarships this year.

The initiative, launched in 2023, is a collaborative effort between BML and the MOC aimed at supporting the development of Maldivian athletes.

BML said the scholarship programme is designed to help athletes develop their skills and reach their full potential in sport. The MOC will oversee the selection process, with all member associations eligible to apply.

Under the agreement, BML will fund training at high-performance centres abroad for athletes selected under the programme.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, BML’s chief executive and managing director, Mohamed Shareef, said the agreement reflected the bank’s commitment to nurturing sporting talent in the Maldives.

“This investment in Maldivian athletes today opens the door to strengthening the future of sports in the Maldives and achieving international success,” he said.

MOC president Mohamed Abdul Sattar, also known as Champi, said the investment would help athletes enhance their skills and create new opportunities.

Since the programme’s launch, eight athletes have undergone training through the scholarship scheme.

BML is also working in partnership with the national swimming, tennis, basketball and surfing associations.
