Bank of Maldives (BML) has signed two landmark agreements with Weixin Pay (WeChat Pay) and Visit Maldives Corporation to strengthen digital payment solutions in the Maldives and promote the country as a tourism destination.

Under the tripartite strategic agreement, BML, Weixin Pay and Visit Maldives will collaborate to market the Maldives more effectively, increase tourist engagement through digital platforms, and enhance tourism promotion activities. A key focus of the partnership is to provide a seamless and convenient experience for Chinese tourists visiting the Maldives.

As part of the collaboration, BML and Weixin Pay will also explore opportunities for Maldivian citizens and businesses to adopt innovative payment technologies, including biometric-based payment solutions, to further modernise the country’s payment ecosystem.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef said the agreement would significantly enhance the payment experience for tourists.

“This partnership will improve the use of biometric payments and elevate the overall service experience for tourists from different countries, while also supporting the growth and development of the tourism sector,” he said.

In addition to the signing ceremony, BML and Weixin Pay jointly hosted an information session on the Weixin Pay ecosystem, attended by representatives from leading tourism resorts.

The session highlighted how Chinese tourists can easily make digital payments for goods and services using Weixin Pay, and how resorts and tourism businesses can enhance guest experiences through seamless digital transactions.

BML currently processes transactions from all major international credit and debit card networks, including American Express, Visa, MasterCard and UnionPay, as well as widely used digital wallets such as BML Pay, Weixin Pay, Alipay, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Through its merchant portal and MPOS application, BML provides comprehensive online payment solutions, enabling real-time payment requests, secure transaction monitoring and uninterrupted management of online business operations.
