STELCO employs 80 persons with disabilities

With 30 new hires today, STELCO now employs a total 80 persons with disabilities, Managing Director Ahmed Shamaah Rasheed said today.

With 30 new hires today, STELCO now employs a total 80 persons with disabilities, Managing Director Ahmed Shamaah Rasheed said today.

Speaking at the ceremony held today to handover the job letters to these 30 new hires, Shamaah said that the individuals were selected from across 20 islands. He described the hiring of these persons with disabilities as a major step forward for the company.

Shamaah said that providing such jobs empower persons with disabilities to contribute to national development and increase their inclusion in society. 

"The work environment is an important step towards building self confidence and broadening their role in society. The hope is that other institutions will see this as an example and provide further opportunities to such persons," Shamaah said. 

Shamaah stated that every individual is equipped with unique skills and capabilities, and it is the responsibility of all to provide opportunities to use them.

The letters of employment were presented to the new hires by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed. 

Speaking at the ceremony, the First Lady said that exposure to the work environment brings many health benefits to persons with disabilities, and bring positive changes to their daily lives. 

"Health-wise, the opportunity to make new friends brings joy, psychologically. Having set work schedules also presents physical health benefits. It will instill responsibility," the First Lady said. 

Providing jobs to persons with disabilities will lead to the learning and developing of new skills, she said.

Government institutions are hiring persons with disabilities with the aim of providing equal opportunities.
