Further expansion of the Maafaru International Airport has been contracted to a Chinese company today.

National airline, Maldivian, which operates the airport, contracted the project to Hunan No.6 Engineering.

Under this project, a new two storey building will be constructed to expand the Maagaru Airport terminal. The new terminal building will have a  CIP Lounge, passenger lounge, and office spaces.

Maldivian said that the project is expected to reach completion within 10 months.

In July this year, Maafaru Airport was established as an international airport. The airport's runway was expanded to 2,850 meters, with wide-body aircrafts now able to land. Space was also allocated for parking jets and airplanes.

Maafaru International Airport was developed under two separate phases.

The project was initially contracted in 2018 to Singapore's  Tuff Offshore Engineering Services Pte Ltd. The total cost of the project was at USD 49 million (MVR 754 million).

In 2022, the second phase was contracted to MTCC for USD 27 million (MVR 415 million).
