The Bank of Maldives (BML), the national bank, announced today that it has enabled customers to receive their One-Time Passwords (OTP) via WhatsApp.

In a press release, BML stated that WhatsApp has been added as an official channel for receiving the OTPs required for the bank's online transactions.

BML said that customers will now be able to receive OTPs conveniently via WhatsApp on the phone number registered with the bank.

BML noted that the addition of WhatsApp, alongside the existing official OTP channels—SMS, email, and the Authenticator app—will further simplify transactions for customers.

BML CEO Mohamed Shareef stated that as the use of digital banking grows, the bank is continually working to provide customers with innovative and secure ways to make payments.

"Enabling the use of WhatsApp as a means of receiving OTP will help provide banking services to our customers securely and easily," Shareef said.

BML advised that customers who wish to receive their OTP via WhatsApp can change their preferred OTP channel through the Internet Banking platform or the Mobile Banking app.

To ensure customer security during the process of changing the OTP channel to WhatsApp, customers will be required to use their currently active OTP channel to authenticate the change.

Separately, BML today also enabled the use of QR codes for money transfers through its mobile application.

This move by BML comes after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu previously stated that changes would be implemented through BML to provide greater ease and convenience for the public.
