Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced that much of the work to install additional elevators in Hiyaa towers has been completed.
An HDC official said yesterday that installation work in half of the 16 towers is now complete. The new elevators in Towers 1, 3, and 4 are already in use, while installation in Tower 2 is finished and awaiting activation.
More than 50 percent of the installation work in the remaining towers has also been completed, the official said.
China’s Shenyang Yuanda Intellectual Industry Group Co. Ltd was awarded the contract in April last year for USD 18 million (MVR 278 million) to install 32 new elevators. The project was originally scheduled for completion by next month, but HDC expects the deadline to be extended to June next year.
The 25-storey Hiyaa towers, built during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, have long faced complaints from residents about inadequate elevator capacity with some towers equipped with only three lifts.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, during his election campaign, pledged to install more elevators to ease congestion and improve daily convenience for residents.
