STELCO's new training centre, State Utility Skills Academy, in K. Thulusdhoo has been inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu yesterday.

Thulusdhoo was the final stop in the President's recent visit to islands of Kaafu atoll.

President Muizzu was joined by STELCO Managing Director Ahmed Shamah Rasheed and other senior officials of the company at the inauguration ceremony held in Thulusdhoo yesterday.

The development of the training centre had begun in June last year.

STELCO Regional Department General Manager Mohamed Yasir has previously told Mihaaru News that the company currently sends about four members of staff per year abroad for trainings. He said that 15-day-long trainings for these four staff members cost over MVR 400,000.

Yasir said then that having the academy here in Maldives will offer a stress-free environment where staff can undergo training without the need to go abroad, and in a more cost-efficient manner.

The centre is equipped with accommodation quarters as well. It has training rooms, electrical training rooms, control training rooms, mechanical training rooms and MVHV rooms for when it is necessary.

STELCO began the training centre project under the leadership of former Managing Director Hussain Fahmy. At the time, Fahmy said that the objective in developing the training centre is to train youth in mechanical engineering, and to facilitate skills development and certification in the field even for existing staff.

STELCO plans to introduce minimum qualifications for employment in their engineering department.

Interested applicants can reach out to STELCO, who plan to conduct courses there in collaboration with the Maldives National University.

STELCO aims to train approximately 300 individuals annually.
