State Electric Company (Stelco) has inaugurated its new power plant in Kaafu atoll Kaafu Atoll, completing the project in what it described as record time.

The facility was officially opened by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his ongoing tour of islands in Kaafu Atoll. He was accompanied by Stelco Managing Director Ahmed Shamah and several senior company officials.

Construction of the Dhiffushi power plant began on 26 June 2024 and was completed on 30 April 2025, making it the first project initiated and completed under the current administration.

According to Dhiffushi station manager Hussain Shafiu, the island’s previous power plant had a generation capacity of 2,200 kW, while the new facility provides three times that capacity, significantly increasing reliability and meeting future demand.

The new 30,000 square foot building includes an office, kitchen, coffee corner, and prayer room.

Stelco said the project also resolved long-standing housing issues for its staff, who previously had to rent accommodation on the island at high cost. A two-bedroom accommodation block has been built within the premises to house employees, offering what the company called a “major cost relief.”

The power plant also features a spacious control room and two new fuel tanks to boost fuel storage and supply efficiency.
