Dhiraagu, the company that helped bridge the gap between the Maldives’ islands, was established in May 1988 as a joint venture between the British telecommunications firm Cable & Wireless and the Maldivian government.

Dhiraagu began offering their services to atolls shortly after in October 1988. They then began work on providing internet services in Maldives in order to connect Maldivians to the rest of the world. Dhiraagu finished that project and launched internet services in 1996.

In their 37 years, Dhiraagu has been working to connect and build that connection between Maldivians, along with introducing emerging technology to the nation. Dhiraagu introduced mobile phones to Maldives in 1997, with mobile coverage being introduced to all islands of Maldives by 2008.

Dhiraagu continues to adapt to the turbulent technological advances of the world.

Dhiraagu's vision has aimed them to become one of Maldives' biggest shareholders in digital development and advancement. That aim has Dhiraagu achieving various goals every year, with many goals being achieved just last year as well.

Some of Dhiraagu's achievements last year:

  • Providing fiber broadband connections to all inhabited islands and high speed internet to every household:

Dhiraagu was the first company to provide internet access across all islands in the Maldives. Despite the significant challenges of connecting an island nation, the company succeeded; a remarkable achievement given the geographic dispersion and small populations of many islands.

  • Providing 5G to 73 percent of the population.
  • Opening of the first Tier-4 certified data center:

This is the top tier that is classified under the Uptime Institute's Tier Classification System for data center reliability. The center would facilitate the strengthening of the Maldives digital infrastructure, protect businesses and offer world-class cloud based services.

  • Connection of the SeaMeWe-6 submarine cable to Maldives and projects to further strengthen the nation's connectivity to other countries.
  • Being awarded the "Fastest 5G Network in Maldives" by Ookla Speed Test.
  • Introduction of modern services such as the e-wallet and the "DhiraaguPay" platform.
