IndiGo Airlines officially began operating from Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport (VIA) today, becoming the eighth airline to do so — and notably, the first Indian airline to operate from the newly inaugurated terminal.
A special ceremony was held at Terminal 1 to mark the occasion, attended by Ahmed Faseeh, Controller General of Immigration.
IndiGo, India’s largest airline and the second-largest in Asia, first launched flights to the Maldives on November 15, 2018.

As part of the launch at Terminal 1, IndiGo officially opened its check-in counters and handed out gift bags to the 218 passengers traveling on today’s outbound flight. The inaugural flight to the new terminal, 6E1127, was welcomed with a ceremonial water salute and traditional cultural performances as 229 passengers disembarked.
With IndiGo's addition, the airlines currently operating from Terminal 1 include:
- Maldivian
- Air Arabia
- Beyond
- Fitz Air
- Beijing Capital Airlines
- Batik Air
- Bangkok Airways
Terminal 1 officially began operations on July 26 this year, with Maldivian Airlines being the first carrier to operate from the new terminal.
