Velana International Airport’s new Passenger Terminal 1 has begun serving Batik Air and Bangkok Airways.

To celebrate the milestone, a ceremony was held at Terminal 1, where the guest of honor was Commissioner General of Customs Fatimath Dhiyana. During the ceremony, the check-in counters of Batik Air and Bangkok Air were officially opened.

When the aircraft, Batik Air - OD293-5, and Bangkok Air - PG711-2, approached Terminal 1, a water salute was given respectively. The passengers who arrived were welcomed with traditional cultural dances as they disembarked the planes.

Currently, Terminal 1 serves Maldives’ national airline, Maldivian; UAE low-cost carrier Air Arabia; premium airline Beond; Sri Lanka’s budget airline Fitz Air; and Beijing Capital Airlines. With the two additional airlines joining today, it adds up to a total of 7 airlines being served at Terminal 1.

New Terminal has been in operation since July 26th this year, with the first airline to be served as the National airline of Maldives, Maldivian.

The construction of the terminal began back in 2016, and the total cost spent on it is USD 457 (MVR 7 billion).
