The first lounge at Velana International Airport’s (VIA) new terminal, “Koveli,” was opened yesterday.
The lounge was inaugurated by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Managing Director Ibrahim Mohamed Shareef at a ceremony held in the terminal’s departure area.
Also present were MACL Deputy Managing Directors Mujuthaba Latheef and Mohamed Lamaan, members of the company’s executive committee, officials from the Economic Ministry, and airline representatives.
In a statement, MACL described tourism, travel and hospitality as the backbone of the Maldivian economy, with VIA serving as “the pillar that holds all these industries together.”
The company praised its employees for their role in developing and maintaining the airport, calling it a national service.
Located on the second floor of the new terminal, the 1,230 square metre lounge can accommodate up to 270 passengers.
It features state-of-the-art facilities including a children’s play area, buffet service, shower facilities, baby care rooms, and areas for passengers with special needs.
