Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithafushi has become the first resort in the Maldives to be connected to a submarine cable, marking a major milestone in the country’s telecommunications sector.

Ooredoo Maldives announced the achievement today, calling it a historic step toward building a “Digital Maldives.” The cable, laid through K. Maafushi, connects the resort to Ooredoo’s high-tech data center in Hulhumalé, providing faster, more reliable internet with greater capacity.

This is the first time a submarine cable has been installed at a Maldivian resort. The infrastructure also includes private 5G readiness, dual redundancy, and advanced technology like an AI-powered tree tower—aiming to deliver next-generation digital services to luxury travelers.

Tourism Minister Thorig Ibrahim, Ooredoo CEO Khalid Al Hamadi, Ithafushi General Manager TJ Jaulak, and other officials attended the ceremony.

Ooredoo's CEO said the company has been leading the country's telecom sector for 20 years, pushing for innovation and inclusivity. Minister Thorig also praised the project, noting it brings the Maldives closer to becoming a fully connected, future-ready nation.

“With every step forward, Ooredoo has focused on accessibility. This submarine cable landing—the first at a resort—is another major step toward a fully connected, future-ready Maldives,” he said.

Ithafushi General Manager TJ Jaulak said he was proud to host the event and noted that seamless connectivity is essential for meeting the high expectations of today’s luxury travelers.
