Police have launched an investigation into the crash of several drones used during the opening ceremony of the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA).
The case was filed by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which operates VIA. Police said that an inquiry is underway and that various parties involved will be questioned as part of the investigation.
The incident occurred during a large-scale drone light show, which featured around 1,000 drones and was staged as part of the ceremony marking the inauguration of the new terminal. According to reports, a number of drones malfunctioned mid-show, falling onto the runway and surrounding areas of the airport.
A letter addressed to the police—now circulating on social media—alleges that both MACL and the show’s operator incurred significant financial losses as a result of the mishap.
The drone performance was designed to depict key moments from the Maldives’ independence and the historical journey of Velana International Airport. The event also featured the largest fireworks display ever staged in the country.
