The new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) was officially inaugurated tonight, coinciding with the 60th Independence Day of Maldives.

The launch marks the completion of one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the country's history.

The event was commemorated with the largest drone show ever staged in Maldives, featuring vibrant displays celebrating national identity and heritage. The show was followed by a stunning fireworks display, lighting up the skies from 19 points around Male'.

Initiated nine years ago, construction of the terminal was a USD 457 million (MVR 7 billion) undertaking, designed to significantly expand the airport’s capacity and modernize the country’s primary international gateway.

The terminal's architecture blends functionality with a strong sense of national identity. Visitors are greeted by intricate stone carvings that reflect the Maldives' rich history, culture, and religious heritage. Inside, the design features tones inspired by the ocean and islands, with wild blue hues and panoramic views of the surrounding seascape.

The new terminal has been designed to optimize the passenger journey from check-in to boarding. A total of 47 check-in counters and six self-check-in kiosks have been installed, promising to reduce service time by over 30 percent compared to the previous terminal.

Security and immigration procedures have also been restructured. While the former terminal required security screening at the initial entry point, the new system follows international best practices, with security checks and immigration processing now located on the second floor. The terminal houses 38 immigration counters, aimed at expediting clearance during peak hours.

After clearing immigration, passengers will pass through an immersive tunnel leading to a revamped retail zone. Approximately 4,000 square feet have been allocated for duty-free shopping, enabling a greater selection of premium brands and enhanced retail experiences.

The terminal features five baggage belts capable of handling up to 12 aircraft simultaneously, in addition to a dedicated Out-of-Gauge (OOG) belt for oversized luggage, including surfboards. An automated baggage screening system has also been introduced, contributing to the overall speed and efficiency of services.

Initially, the terminal will handle flights operated by the national carrier, Maldivian, with plans to accommodate other airlines in phases. VIA currently manages traffic from 34 airlines, and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) aims to transition all operations to the new terminal by September.

With expanded retail space, improved operational capacity, and the ability to welcome more airlines during peak hours, MACL projects a revenue increase of 7 to 8 percent in the first year of the terminal's operation, followed by a 15 percent rise in the second year.
