Eyecare Hospital has begun offering corneal collagen cross-linking (C3R) surgery in Maldives, a procedure that treats the progressive eye condition keratoconus.

The hospital said the surgery is being led by ophthalmologist and cornea specialist Dr Adib Uddin, and was first introduced in March.

Since then, more than 30 patients have undergone the procedure successfully.

Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped surface at the front of the eye gradually thins and bulges outward into a cone shape. This distortion can lead to blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light and glare, particularly in younger patients. If left untreated, it can interfere with daily activities and may eventually require a corneal transplant.

“C3R offers a safe and effective solution that helps stabilize the cornea, preserve vision, and prevent further deterioration,” said Dr Adib.

The procedure involves applying riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops to the cornea, followed by controlled exposure to ultraviolet-A light. This process strengthens the collagen fibres within the cornea, halting the progression of keratoconus.

Eyecare Hospital first performed the surgery on a 17-year-old patient who had experienced significant vision impairment due to keratoconus. Following the procedure, the patient's vision improved and stabilized, the hospital said.

Eyecare has introduced several specialized eye treatments previously unavailable in Maldives. Last year, the hospital launched retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) laser treatment for premature babies. It also offers cataract and vitreoretinal surgery.
