With the successful completion of the first-ever Burunuboma Sports Fishing Tournament, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has announced plans to position Maldives as a leading global destination for sports fishing.
Held earlier this month, the Burunuboma tournament marked the largest international fishing event organized by MMPRC’s Visit Maldives Club and one of the most significant fishing tournaments ever held in the country.
The tournament brought together nine teams, including Team Dubai, who emerged as champions.
Designed to promote the Maldives’ fast-growing sports fishing industry, the event also provided an opportunity for local fishers to compete at an international level.
MMPRC noted that Burunuboma has set a historic benchmark for Maldives’ sport fishing efforts. The event has received overwhelming positive feedback from global fishing enthusiasts and has significantly strengthened Maldives' image as a sustainable sports fishing destination.
The tournament followed International Game Fish Association (IGFA) guidelines, emphasizing sustainable fishing through catch-and-release practices.
Participants commended the tournament’s organization and the environmentally responsible approach to sport fishing.
Also in attendance was Robert “Fly” Navarro, the Maldives' Global Ambassador for Sports fishing.
MMPRC said that the second edition of Burunuboma will be held next year.
