Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has been awarded the contract to expand the commercial port in Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi, as part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen regional logistics and economic development.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held yesterday, with MPL CEO Mohamed Rishwan signing on behalf of the company and Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed signing on behalf of the government.
The expansion project is a key component of the administration’s plan to develop regional ports, enhance inter-island connectivity, and promote business activity across the atolls.
Once completed, the upgraded port in Kulhudhuffushi will serve as a dedicated logistics hub for the northern region, catering to islands in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, and Noonu atolls.
The phased development will expand port capacity, introduce modern cargo handling systems, and include infrastructure for the safe storage of perishable goods.
The government has described the initiative as the first step towards establishing a scheduled and sustainable freight transport network spanning the length of the country and reduce transport costs and deliver long-term economic benefits.
