By the end of 2024, the amount of money circulating in Maldives' economy has decreased by MVR 100 million.

As per central bank Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA)'s annual report, MVR 59.1 billion is being circulated in the Maldives economy at present. The amount of money in circulation recorded in 2023 was at MVR 59.2 billion.

As per MMA's statistics, in 2023, the amount of money circulating in the economy increased by 7 percent. The previous year also showed an increase of 6 percent.

Although last year saw a 1 percent decrease, the amount of money circulated in the economy increased by 45 percent when compared to the previous five years. In 2020, the amount was at MVR 41 billion. Hence, over the past five years, the amount of money circulating in the economy has increased by MVR 18 million.

MMA's report shows that the money circulating in the economy decreased due to decrease in net profit asset. Net foreign asset decreased to 31 percent. This was caused due to an increase in MMA's liability through taking a USD 400 million currency swap facility.

Meanwhile, net domestic asset increased by 6 percent. This is due to increased amounts issued by commercial banks to the private sector.
