The Maldives has called on the world today to restore the rights, human dignity, and livelihoods of the Palestinian people, stating that rebuilding the buildings destroyed in Israel's inhumane attacks alone will not be sufficient.

Speaking at the high-level segment of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland, Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullah Khaleel said that condemning the inhumane attacks on Gaza in Palestine that have been ongoing for 15 months is not enough.

According to Khaleel, the way the world acts today is the strongest test of upholding and protecting the principles of the UN, justice, and human dignity that the entire world must adhere to.

He noted that the Maldives welcomes the current ceasefire agreement in Gaza but emphasized that this is not a permanent solution to the issue.

"Beyond rebuilding destroyed buildings, the international community needs to work more to ensure the rights, human dignity, and livelihoods of the Palestinian people are restored," Khaleel urged.

In his speech, he assured that the government would work to protect international human rights treaties that the Maldives has agreed to and the human rights of the Maldivian citizens.

Highlighting the country's work as a member of the Human Rights Council, Khaleel highlighted the role played by the Maldives in establishing a voluntary trust fund to encourage developing small island nations to participate in the council's work and the world recognition that a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is a human right. In his address, the minister said that human rights should be promoted and protected. Highlighting the work being done by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government, he highlighted the government's emphasis on social issues such as gender equality, adequate housing, increasing the participation of people with disabilities in the community, and mitigating the impact of climate change on the environment.

The 58th session of the Human Rights Council is currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland, from February 24 to April 4. The Maldives is a member state of the UN Human Rights Council from 2023 until the end of 2025.
