Local Government Authority (LGA) has ordered an investigation into Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Gadhdhoo Council President Mohamed Ahmed for allegedly making defamatory remarks against President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and other government officials.

According to a letter sent by the LGA to Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Council President Hassan Faihath, a complaint was filed by a member of the public, claiming that the Gadhdhoo Council President had used defamatory language towards President Muizzu and senior government officials in the council's WhatsApp group.

LGA has instructed Gadhdhoo Atoll Council to investigate the matter and take appropriate actions. However, no action has been taken by the Atoll Council against the Gadhdhoo Council President so far.

Earlier this year, a similar issue arose when the Noonu atoll Kendhikulhudhoo Council released a statement alleging the misuse of state resources for political campaigning, in connection with President Muizzu's visits to atolls.

In response, President Muizzu expressed his opposition to LGA taking action against local councils, reaffirming the government's policy of working with and empowering these councils.
