Fuvahmulah Central MP Ali Fazad has been appointed Chairperson of the Budget Committee formed to review the Supplementary Budget.

This decision was met with a majority approval at today’s parliament sitting, with Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem being appointed Vice Chairperson.

The government introduced a supplementary budget on Thursday, proposing an addition of MVR 5.1 billion to this year’s budget. This increase raises the total budget to MVR 55 billion, up from the original allocation of MVR 49.5 billion, widening the budget deficit to MVR 18.4 billion.

The largest share of the supplementary budget, MVR 2 billion is allocated for PSIP projects. Additionally, MVR 1 billion has been allocated for subsidies, with increased funding for student loans, National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), medical consumables, and salaries.
