An appeal has been submitted to authorize permits allowing foreign musicians and entertainers to perform in Maldives quoting unmet demand in the tourism sector as a result of the scarcity in local performers, which raises concerns within the public.
Tourism minister, Ibrahim Faisal has declared last night that this government will not do anything to pose a disadvantage to local artists.
Many have been expressing concerns regarding the appeal submitted to the tourism ministry by MATI (Maldives Association of Tourism Industry) to authorize visa distribution to allow foreign musicians and entertainers to perform at Maldivian resorts.
The Association’s appeal stated that Dhivehi entertainers are scarce and that the demand in the tourism sector for entertainers is unmet due to this shortage.
Addressing the concerns of the public being raised through social media, the Minister said that he would find a solution to the concerns and assured that no actions that would harm Maldivian entertainers will be taken during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure.
“In the next few days, we will meet with concerned parties and hear the concerns of the public to find a solution, with taking into account the president’s advice,” he said.
Providing visa for foreign musicians and entertainers was ceased during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration.
In addition to distributing visa to foreign perfumers, MATI had also submitted an appeal to increase expatriate employees allowed at a resort to 70% due to a shortage of skilled Maldivian employees in the tourism sector. The current policy allows 55% of foreign workers to be employed at resorts.
The Ministry said the government aims to increase the number of Dhivehi workers in the industry. Therefore, he assures that any changes to the stipulations will be made after careful consideration to ensure the best interests of the people.
